DEATH OF CAPT.W.T. ATKINSON
Was Master of Otter and Lucinda
Captain William Thomas Atkinson Marine surveyor for the Queensland Marine Underwriters’
Association from 1903 until his resignation in 1923. Died on Saturday, aged 85, after a short illness.
Born at Goole, Yorkshire, England, he went to sea with his father. From 1869 to 1873 he served as an apprentice in the barque, Berean, a colonial wool clipper. In 1873 he joined the British India Steam Navigation service, and, as second officer in a trans port, took part in hostilities between Russia and Turkey. Five years later he obtained His captain's certificate, and joined the Royal Mail service from London to Brisbane, and served until 1883, when he made his home in Brisbane.
He was employed in the Customs Department, and later was master, of the Otter and Lucinda. In 1889, as master of the Merrie England, he arranged a cruise around New Guinea with Sir William McGregor. Later he was appointed in turn harbour master at Cooktown and Thursday Island.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. T. R. Brooke, one son, Mr. H. W. Atkinson, and four grandchildren.
